PARIS: The 19th Global Management Challenge 2001 (GMC) final, an Olympics for world management skills, closed here on Thursday.
The Chinese team, represented by Sichuan University, placed third in one of the two group competitions.
The competition requires knowledge on marketing, accounting and strategic management to make decisions in a prescribed time limit and to respond to unexpected market changes, said Ge Jun, chief executive officer of the team.
GMC uses a computer simulation of real market situations as a means of measuring the team's competence in decision-making regarding production, financial control, human resources, quality control, marketing and logistics.
A team generally comprises four to six MBA students or company employees, each holding a key business position such as chief executive officer, chief financial officer or human resources manager.
Each team acts as a real company and the team with the highest virtual share price at the end is the winner.
"GMC creates the links between students and companies in a better way by simulating real-world business skills," said Stephane Roussel, manager of Human Resources Planning for the Carrefour Group, which was a major sponsor of the GMC China national competition held late last year.
"Chinese young competitors are intelligent, creative and hardworking.
They embody the basic and best qualifications for successful managers," said Stephane.
Luis Alves Costa, president of the International Global Management Organizing Committee, told China Daily, "China needs, in the context of WTO accession, senior business personnel with strong abilities and expertise on global management. GMC provides Chinese young managers with the opportunity to see things with a global view."
The Chinese team made its debut in the GMC final in 1996 and received top awards in 1999 and 2000 when represented by MBA teams from the University of International Business and Economics.
